Why Home Security Is Quietly Moving Its AI Off the Cloud

For years, “smart” in home security meant a camera that could notice something and report it: motion detected, person detected, package detected, followed by a notification and a wait.

That model is starting to look outdated.

A growing share of security cameras and connected devices now make their decisions on the device itself, in the fraction of a second before anything gets sent anywhere.

The analyst firm IoT Analytics has flagged 2026 as the point where this stops being a pilot feature and starts becoming the default. Manufacturers across the connected-device market, security cameras included, are building local processing into entire product lines rather than reserving it for a single flagship model. The shift is architectural, not cosmetic: run the detection where the footage is captured, and reserve the cloud for the things that can tolerate a delay.

Latency Has a Real Cost, Measured in Milliseconds

The case for moving AI onto the device isn’t abstract. A cloud-based camera sends its footage to a remote server, waits for an analysis, and only then acts on the result. Research from Forasoft on edge-versus-cloud video surveillance puts that round trip at 300 to 800 milliseconds under normal conditions, a figure that climbs past 1.2 seconds once a cellular connection is involved.

For most smart-home functions, that delay is invisible. Adjusting a thermostat or reviewing a clip an hour later doesn’t need to happen instantly. A security camera trying to intervene in a fast crime is a different case entirely. Package theft is the clearest example: most thefts are over in seconds, so closing the gap between detection and response has to happen before the cloud round trip even finishes, not after the package is already gone.

Local Processing Doesn’t Fail When the Network Does

Speed isn’t the only advantage on-device processing has over the cloud model. A camera running its detection locally keeps working during a network outage. A cloud-dependent camera doesn’t; it can appear to function normally right up until an event happens and no response ever arrives.

Homes are filling up with connected devices that all depend on the same internet connection, and a router outage, an ISP disruption, or simple network congestion shouldn’t be the difference between a camera that responds and one that goes silent at the exact moment it’s needed.

Privacy Rules Are Reinforcing the Same Shift

Performance and reliability explain why on-device processing has been gaining ground on its own merits, but privacy regulation is pushing in the same direction. The EU AI Act and GDPR both restrict how continuously captured video and personal data can be transmitted and stored, and compliance teams are increasingly finding that keeping raw footage on the device, rather than sending it to a server for analysis, is the simplest way to satisfy those restrictions.

For a category built on cameras watching the outside of people’s homes, that convergence of speed, reliability, and privacy is difficult to ignore. What began as an engineering choice for a handful of premium products is becoming closer to a baseline expectation for the category as a whole.

The Camera as the Decision-Maker

The practical effect for homeowners is a camera that behaves less like a recorder and more like a participant. Instead of capturing an event and passing the judgment call along, an on-device system identifies what it’s looking at and can act in the same instant, whether that means sounding an alert, triggering a light, or simply continuing to work through a dropped connection that would have left a cloud-dependent camera dark.

The cloud isn’t disappearing from home security. Long-term storage, large-scale analytics, and software updates will keep happening off-device for the foreseeable future. What’s changing is which part of the job the camera can now handle on its own, and for a category where seconds decide outcomes, that shift is becoming the difference between a system that documents a crime and one built to interrupt it.
