Mohan Bhargava (Shah Rukh Khan) working as a project manager on a rainfall monitoring a satellite NASA, returns to India on a quest to find his childhood nanny Kaveriamma ( Kishori Ballal) whom he had looked upon as his mother. He finds her in a godforsaken village- Charanpur living with a young woman Gita (Gayatri Joshi) and her younger brother Chikku (Master Smith Seth).


Mohan is touched by the condition in which the people live in the village- the poverty, illiteracy, child labour, lack of electricity etc. He is engulfed with a feeling of guilt and is filled with an urge to do something to make things better.

He takes up a mission of bringing electricity to the village. He interacts with the people and the Panchayat, gets to know some of them really well and brings about a movement bringing the villagers together. Eventually he succeeds in bringing power to the village..

The film show cases the problems faced by the people in rural India. Gowrikar's film is so realistic that it is outright poignant and raw in its depiction. The directors intentions may be good but it does not help the audience who are craving for entertainment. The romance between Mohan and Gita are subtle and does not dither away from the main theme. Although it has its moments, it has the feel of a documentary. The length of the film adds to his flaws. One gets a feeling that the director is bent on putting forth his point scene after scene. Cinematography is good, dialogues are stupendous and the film is down to earth throughout. You have to give credit to Gowrikar for putting forth a theme which is close to his heart, completely ignoring the commercial aspect of it.
